UJEP: A partnership that opens doors for students and the region
Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (UJEP) is not only our neighbour in Ústí nad Labem but also a key ally for our foundation. What began as a debate about the reconstruction of the Heller villa has grown into an ambitious plan to support foreign talents and develop the entire region. Together with the university management and individual faculties, we are looking for ways to connect practice with study and bring new energy to both the Ústí and Karlovy Vary regions.

Our journey towards collaboration with the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem (UJEP) began in January 2025. At that time, the first meeting took place with the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design (FUD), whose original goal was mutual introductions and discussions on how students could get involved in the reconstruction of Villa Heller and its adjacent garden. Even then, it was clear that this would not be limited to just one project.
From Villa Heller to residential stays
During our discussions, we came across an interesting topic regarding exchange stays for foreign students. We talked about so-called residential places where students could live and create for a period of three months or longer. Together, we concluded that the Villa Heller itself would not be suitable for this specific purpose, but this idea did not fall by the wayside. On the contrary, it became a strong inspiration for the further possible direction of the foundation fund – namely for the creation of these residential places in other cities and towns. And this is not only in the Ústí region but also in the Karlovy Vary region, where UJEP projects also extend.
Specific steps and inspiration from abroad
During subsequent meetings, we already discussed the specific outlines of cooperation between NFMD and the Faculty of Arts and Design. We agreed that residential places are of enormous importance for the development of the region. Therefore, we agreed that FUD UJEP will prepare a comprehensive proposal and financial overview, which will be based on proven models of similar projects abroad. We want to ensure that this completely new project will be a real benefit for both incoming students and the regions that will host them. During the next visit, we had the opportunity to talk with the rector of UJEP, who warmly welcomes the activities of NFMD and expressed his support for them.
